Reading this book "Hearing the cloud: Can Music Help Reimagine The Future?" by the young composer/writer Emile Frankel - "Can music be a curse? Here is an alternate history of online politics and new technology from the perspective of listening, typing, composing, and shared hearing. Emile Frankel presents a rigorous account of a world felt to be in crisis." Highly recommended 🙂 ... See MoreSee Less

Everybody is sick of being confined to home these days. I feel like posting this old song, "On My Doorstep" which I wrote in 2006 as an ode to home. Maybe it can turn the mood if you feel like being in prison. I wrote it when I was by myself on a month-long artist residency in Canada, and was very homesick and missed my family. I remember writing the song in a beautiful room with a grand piano and big windows with amazing view of the mountains, the sun was shining, not a cloud in the sky. It didn't help, it still felt empty. Before I left for Canada, we had just bought our house. After years and years of dealing with all kinds of unpredictable living conditions and landlords, we found this strange old house by the sea in Stavanger, Norway, that we actually could afford. The house was very worn down and there was a lot to fix, but it was ours. We settled down, and have been there since. This view of the home from somewhere else is very different perspective from nowadays, but still: Having a place you can call home is really all right. The alternative, not so great. So if you are bored or quarantined, remember that this too, will pass. The backstory and intention in the song - which was only a vehicle for improvisation - was interpreted beautifully by Arild Hoem, sax, John Lilja, double bass and Dag Magnus Narvesen, drums when we recorded it for the album "Morpho" by Gunhild Seim & Time Jungle in 2009. When I listen back now I can't really believe how well these guys improvised together and nailed the mood of being far far away and longing for your home www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYvNPSPIVp4 ...
